Pervasive PSQL Vx Server Release Candidate

Pervasive Engineering has just delivered the release candidate for Pervasive PSQL Vx Server.

If you have been on extended vacation or living under a rock and haven't heard of Pervasive PSQL Vx  Server - here is a quick update: Pervasive PSQL Vx Server is the hypervisor-friendly edition of Pervasive PSQL. That means running your PSQL database application on a virtual machine with your favorite hypervisor from VMware, Microsoft or Citrix is now very, very simple to do. If you are thinking about VMs or trying to sort out how to run your software in the Cloud, either for hosting your application or just shifting your IT infrastructure, Pervasive PSQL Vx Server will help you get there.

Check out these feature highlights:
  • Live migration support. Now PSQL engines running on VMs can move easily from one physical machine or appliance to another. Pervasive PSQL Vx Server enables hypervisor-initiated automated moves of VMs across physical machines.
  • Failover and high availability support. When a hypervisor is alerted to a potential failure of a physical machine, it automatically moves the VM to another server. Pervasive PSQL Vx Server's updated licensing process works in synch with the hypervisor operation, making sure failovers take place without a hitch.
  • Simplified license validation. License validation for Pervasive PSQL Vx requires only that the VM hostname and all VM NIC MAC addresses remain unchanged (instead of verifying details of the motherboard and other hardware in standard PSQL Server). This is what makes support for live migration possible. A single product key can be used on any operating system supported by Pervasive PSQL Vx Server (Windows, Linux, Mac OS, 32- or 64-bit). Changing operating system platforms has never been easier.
  • Expanded hypervisor support. Pervasive PSQL Vx includes support for full, partial and paravirtualization. Click here for a complete list of supported hypervisors from VMware, Microsoft and Citrix.
  • VM and Cloud-Centric Pricing. With Pervasive PSQL Vx Server, there is no need to count users or CPUs. Pervasive PSQL Vx license pricing is based on how much work the database engine can do - a combination of concurrent sessions and data in use. In addition to permanent licenses, we're also introducing time limited licenses for customers who have short term requirements for more database capacity.
  • Improved Backup. A license for Pervasive Backup Agent and the Backup Agent executable are included with each purchase of Pervasive PSQL Vx Server. For Windows users, PSQL Vx supports Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) full backup and full copy. The combination of VSS support and Backup Agent will make it much easier to automate backups of live Pervasive PSQL Vx Server databases.

TECH TIPS

Understanding Capacity Based Licensing

What is it? Capacity based licensing means that customers pay for a license based on the amount of work the database engine can do. Pervasive calculates the amount of work, or capacity, of a PSQL Vx Server database using two factors: 1) the number of concurrent sessions (internal data-consuming connections to the transactional or relational engine), and 2) data in use (total size of all the files opened by the database at any given point in time).

What can I buy? Pervasive PSQL Vx Server will be available in 4 base configurations - Small, Medium, Large and SuperSize. Concurrent session count and data in use increases are both available to allow customers to fine tune database capacity. And, unique to Pervasive PSQL Vx Server, time limited 60-day session count and data in use increases are available to provide an affordable way for businesses to meet peak database demand requirements. The planned sizes for Pervasive PSQL Vx Server are:
  • Small = 25 Concurrent Sessions and 5 GB Data in Use
  • Medium = 100 Concurrent Sessions and 20 GB Data in Use
  • Large = 250 Concurrent Sessions and 50 GB Data in Use
  • SuperSize = Unlimited Concurrent Sessions and Unlimited GB Data
How do I estimate capacity requirements? There are two methods of estimating capacity requirements for Pervasive PSQL Vx Server 1) download a trial of PSQL Vx, run the application and review data in the Monitor Utility, or 2) use Monitor data from a production system to provide an estimate. In both cases it is very important to collect data from a system that is running at or near the application's peak load.

Moving to the Cloud with Pervasive PSQL

IDC's latest forecast in its "IDC Predictions for 2012: Competing for 2020"  reckons that 80% of new applications will be developed for the cloud and that packaged applications will start moving to the cloud at a rate four times faster than 2011. The Bloor Group has just published a whitepaper that will provide any software vendor or end user with a clear simple path to understanding what is needed to move their applications to the cloud. Whether you're just beginning to think about virtual machines and a small private cloud or whether your customers are pushing hard for you to deliver your application as a service, Moving to the Cloud with Pervasive PSQL is a great place to start.
