Pervasive Insights PSQL Edition

June 2009 Issue

End of General Availability for Pervasive PSQL v9 - July 1, 2009

If your application runs on Pervasive® PSQL™ v9, you need to stock up or, better yet, migrate to Pervasive PSQL v10. After four successful years, Pervasive PSQL v9 will no longer be generally available. This means that PSQL v9 will not be available for sale either online or via our published price list, and all phone and electronic support for Pervasive PSQL v9 will be chargeable. Now's a good time to check with your local reseller to see if they're offering any close out deals.

There are two important exceptions to the transition away from Pervasive PSQL v9:

1)   Pervasive PSQL v9 for NetWare will continue to be available

2)   OEMs will be able to purchase Pervasive PSQL v9 as allowed by their respective contracts

If you’re ready to migrate to Pervasive PSQL v10, download a trial and try a quick test. Chances are excellent that your application will work as-is and you’ll get some great added features (like XIO, and support for 64-bit and Windows Server 2008).

Pervasive AuditMaster Shines at Sage Insights

Sage Software is a multinational software company and long time partner of Pervasive.  Its list of products is huge and includes iconic accounting and ERP applications like Peachtree, Sage Accpac, and Sage PFW (Platinum for Windows) – all of which use Pervasive PSQL as the database. Sage has been selling Pervasive PSQL with their applications for years and recently added Pervasive AuditMaster® to the product line.  While a great audit tool might make obvious sense to database savvy users, it has been a bit of a challenge finding a value proposition that resonated with Sage resellers.

Working with Sage and their fantastic consulting partner MIS Consulting and Sales, Inc., Pervasive built a demo with Sage PFW using Pervasive AuditMaster to identify fraud and output the evidence to Crystal Reports.  The result?  The resellers immediately grasped the Pervasive AuditMaster concept – with most business applications, given the right level of access, there are ways to commit and cover up fraud that are very difficult to detect. Unless, that is, you’re tracking every change in some key tables in the database.  Now Sage has a simple way to demonstrate the value of audit tools to its resellers.

If you’ve got an application that would benefit from adding Pervasive AuditMaster, maybe we can build you a demo too.  Interested? Send an email to with AuditMaster Demo as the subject.

Voluntary Product Accessibility Template for PSQL v10

Do you sell to the U.S. Government? If so, you might need to download the recently published VPAT for Pervasive PSQL v10. The purpose of the Voluntary Product Accessibility Template®, or VPAT®, is to assist government contracting officials and other buyers in making preliminary assessments regarding the availability of commercial "Electronic and Information Technology" products and services with features that support accessibility. If youre including Pervasive PSQL as part of your bid for government projects that have accessibility requirements, the VPAT is a great place to start.

Accessing Files on NAS

This month's Tech Tip is provided by
Linda Anderson, Support Lead, Database Division

When using Pervasive PSQL to access files residing on a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device or a remote drive, it may be necessary to change the account being used by the service.  By default, the services for the server engine run under the local system account, which typically has sufficient rights to access files on the server.  But, when accessing files on a NAS or remote drive, you will need to change the account the services are running under to a user with rights to the files.  This is done by bringing up the Properties of the service, and selecting the Log On tab.  Typical symptoms indicating the need for this change are status codes 94, 11, 35, or 7039.

OEMs Love the Digital License Enforcement Plan

If you’ve downloaded a trial or purchased anything through the Pervasive E-store, you’ve gotten a version of Pervasive PSQL that’s enabled for digital license enforcement. Simply put, it’s technology that helps make sure that installations of Pervasive PSQL are valid and that licenses are activated on only one machine at a time.  Once an installation of Pervasive PSQL has been activated, it can’t be activated on another machine (unless it has been deactivated first).

OEMs like the idea because it gives them IP protection too. Even if an OEM application has no copy protection, any unlicensed copy of the OEM software will be useless because the database can’t be activated without a legitimate key (and the OEM application won't work without a database). By using Pervasive PSQL, OEMs can get simple and effective IP protection – at no extra charge.

If you’re an OEM customer who would like to know more about Digital License Enforcement, contact your account manager or send an email to

Answerman and Zippy in the Windy City

Zippy and I just got back from the North American OEM Roundtable in Chicago. We met with the OEMs for two days and got great feedback on our plans for Pervasive PSQL. Two topics that really piqued interest were: Digital License Enforcement and finding better ways to sell the security products.
