What a year it was! 2007 was a busy and productive year for the Pervasive Database group, with the launch of the eagerly awaited PSQL Summit v10 and the subsequent multi-city tour introducing it throughout North America and Europe. And what better way to kick off the New Year than by gearing up for v10’s first upgrade to make it compatible with Linux and Windows Server 2008! Listen as Jim brings us up to date. TECH TIP Does PSQL run in a 64-bit environment? YES
For some, the promise of 64-bit computing is only now becoming a reality. Though 64-bit versions of both the Windows and Linux operating systems have been available for some time, with this technology becoming more mainstream and newer operating systems available (Windows Vista and Server 2008), many businesses and IT departments are evaluating to the newest hardware and operating systems available to 64-bit environments. We have often heard the question, “Does PSQL run in a 64-bit environment?” It is that question that we want to answer in this month’s TECH TIP. Pervasive PSQL Summit v10 is supported running in a 64-bit environment. Even better is the availability of a 64-bit version of the PSQL v10 Server engine and Client. The 64-bit version of Pervasive PSQL v10 provides the potential for significant performance improvements by allowing the allocation of more system RAM to the database engine cache. Prior Pervasive PSQL versions were limited by 32-bit constraints, which meant that no more than 2 GB of memory could be allocated to the database engine cache. This limitation is removed when running the 64-bit Pervasive PSQL v10 Server engine on a 64-bit operating system. Please note that Pervasive PSQL v10 Server (64-bit) works seamlessly with 32-bit applications. This means that you do not have to have a 64-bit application to take advantage of the performance benefits provided by 64-bit computing. Both 32-bit and 64-bit applications can take advantage of newer hardware and operating systems by installing the 64-bit edition of PSQL v10.. For those of you that are not quite ready to move to 64-bit technology, you will be happy to know that we have kept you in mind as we have developed PSQL v10. When running Pervasive PSQL v10 Server on certain 32-bit Windows Server operating system, you can take advantage of our Xtreme IO (XIO) driver. This XIO driver manages available system memory, beyond the 2 GB limit, in order to cache PSQL data files for improved performance. For PSQL v9.5 users, the good news is that we still support our database running in a 64-bit environment. You can run PSQL v9.5 Server on Microsoft Windows 2003 64-bit, or on 64-bit distributions of Linux. For more information review the white paper: PSQL Summit v10 - 64-Bit Technology Overview.
