A MESSAGE FROM GILBERT

A fast start to the new year: That's how we like itThe year is off to a fast start at Pervasive – a pace we enjoy. Our engineers already are hard work on Pervasive® PSQL Summit™ v10’s next version release. Look for the v10.10 release this spring.

Many of the new v10.10 features come directly from input we gathered from you during Beta offerings and when we took Pervasive PSQL Summit v10 on the road in our autumn 2007 museum tour. In the coming update, you can expect feature-rich additions such as Linux support, .NET and Visual Studio 2008 capability and high availability, among others. For your insights and suggestions, I thank you.

I have noticed that as the Microsoft Windows Vista™ operating system is adopted by more and more organizations, trial downloads of Pervasive PSQL Summit v10 increase in step. It’s gratifying to see that our partners, customers and prospects can turn to Pervasive for a database that meets their future technology needs while continuing to operate in the diverse environments that are the reality for companies worldwide today.

Our development priorities for Pervasive PSQL Summit v10 took into account the emergence of 64-bit computing and the adoption of Windows Vista, along with the expected release of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 within the next few months. As the pace of technology change continues to accelerate, Pervasive PSQL remains your trusted source for a reliable, scalable database that protects your investment in legacy systems while allowing you to embrace new technologies at your own pace. If you have not had the opportunity to download PSQL v10, I invite you to do so.

I also want to take this opportunity to mention that our ecosystem products – Pervasive AuditMaster™, Pervasive Backup Agent™, and Pervasive Data Exchange™ – will be available this spring to meet 64-bit demand. Rest assured the Pervasive Database Products team is in high gear to serve our partners and customers in 2008. As new offerings come available, we will let you know in Pervasive PSQL Insights.

Thank you for your interest in Pervasive and for your business, and I wish you a prosperous and productive 2008.

Sincerely,

Gilbert Van Cutsem,
General Manager, Database Products

What a year it was!

2007 was a busy and productive year for the Pervasive Database group, with the launch of the eagerly awaited PSQL Summit v10 and the subsequent multi-city tour introducing it throughout North America and Europe. And what better way to kick off the New Year than by gearing up for v10’s first upgrade to make it compatible with Linux and Windows Server 2008! Listen as Jim brings us up to date.

TECH TIP

Does PSQL run in a 64-bit environment? YES

For some, the promise of 64-bit computing is only now becoming a reality. Though 64-bit versions of both the Windows and Linux operating systems have been available for some time, with this technology becoming more mainstream and newer operating systems available (Windows Vista and Server 2008), many businesses and IT departments are evaluating to the newest hardware and operating systems available to 64-bit environments.

We have often heard the question, “Does PSQL run in a 64-bit environment?” It is that question that we want to answer in this month’s TECH TIP.

Pervasive PSQL Summit v10 is supported running in a 64-bit environment. Even better is the availability of a 64-bit version of the PSQL v10 Server engine and Client. The 64-bit version of Pervasive PSQL v10 provides the potential for significant performance improvements by allowing the allocation of more system RAM to the database engine cache. Prior Pervasive PSQL versions were limited by 32-bit constraints, which meant that no more than 2 GB of memory could be allocated to the database engine cache. This limitation is removed when running the 64-bit Pervasive PSQL v10 Server engine on a 64-bit operating system.

Please note that Pervasive PSQL v10 Server (64-bit) works seamlessly with 32-bit applications. This means that you do not have to have a 64-bit application to take advantage of the performance benefits provided by 64-bit computing. Both 32-bit and 64-bit applications can take advantage of newer hardware and operating systems by installing the 64-bit edition of PSQL v10..

For those of you that are not quite ready to move to 64-bit technology, you will be happy to know that we have kept you in mind as we have developed PSQL v10. When running Pervasive PSQL v10 Server on certain 32-bit Windows Server operating system, you can take advantage of our Xtreme IO (XIO) driver. This XIO driver manages available system memory, beyond the 2 GB limit, in order to cache PSQL data files for improved performance.

For PSQL v9.5 users, the good news is that we still support our database running in a 64-bit environment. You can run PSQL v9.5 Server on Microsoft Windows 2003 64-bit, or on 64-bit distributions of Linux.
